Sometimes a movie is exactly what it looks like. This dirt-cheap Korean Godzilla knock-off plays like a dirt-cheap Korean Godzilla knock-off, but minus most of the goofy charm that might imply. Points for actually keeping the monster onscreen for a lot of the run time, demerits for giving said monster precious little to do with all of that screen time.
Yongary spends more time scratching himself than he does smashing up the various sets and miniatures, and the usual gang of boring humans doesn't do much to pick up the slack. This does feature a surprisingly gruesome monster death scene, if that's what does it for you. And if you're following me on Letterboxd, there's a solid chance that's exactly what does it for you.
Well, or the one in the first Gamera that actually gets people killed because he think Gamera is sooooo nice and friendly. As for the rest of the movie, this is a fun giant monster movie with tons of destruction and the monster bleeding out of its ass after it dies. It sure looks like that.

Jedoch orientierte sich Regisseur Kim Ki-duk hier ganz offensichtlich an der japanischen Riesenechse, den fast die ganze Zeit fühlt sich der Film wie eine Kopie eines Godzilla-Filmes an. Aber leider wie keine Gute! Es wirkt alles eben wie kopiert, aber nicht besser gekonnt. So erzeugt "Yongary" zu keinem Zeitpunkt den Charme der klassischen Toho-Filme und fühlt sich selbst bei der kurzen Laufzeit von nicht mal 70 Minuten sehr zäh an.

As per usual in these kind of films, military are brought in to stop him and an annoying kid with a flashlight grows a friendly bond towards him. The first half hour is pretty uneventful, but once Yongary shows up in his rubber-costumed glory, it becomes a laugh riot. He's a carbon copy of Zilla in…. This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. Yongary is the first Kaiju movie where I feel legitimately bad for the monster. Most of the time, when humanity has to beat back the awe-inspiring power of some ancient titan, it seems quick and to the point.
The Korean military wanted to go that route, pummeling it with model railroad missiles. But that kid that sadistic little psychopath who opens the film tormenting a harmless married couple with an untested radiological weapon he single-handedly resurrects the missile-vanquished creature so his weird family can slowly torture it with industrial-strength itching powder until it shits itself to death. Not good or original at all but pretty damn funny. I'll give it a full star because of a random scene where the monster dances with a child to a surf song. What do you get when South Korea sticks a horn on a Godzilla suit and give the monster all the energy of a sleepy drunkard? You get a pretty bad movie, but an always enjoyable time from the boys over at MST3K.
It's a low budget Kaiju affair, you're gonna get exactly what you'd expect to see.
